Phonics and Early Reading
At Carrington Primary School we follow the Phonics programme: ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’.
In Reception and Year One, children have a daily phonics session. In this session, children learn how to blend and segment sounds alongside learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (the sounds that letters make). As their Phonics knowledge progresses, children are taught how to represent longer vowel sounds using groups of letters e.g. ‘ai’ in ‘rain’, ‘igh’ in ‘light’. In Year Two, children initially consolidate their Phonics knowledge then move onto spelling rules.
As well as daily Phonics lessons, children in Reception and Key Stage One have reading practise sessions which take place three times per week. At the end of each week, children take home the Phonics book they have been reading in practise sessions, along with a sharing book of their choice.
